Thirty passengers were injured when an MTC bus lost control and fell off the arterial Anna flyover in Chennai on Wednesday at around 2 p.m. Eight ambulances and a fire tender were rushed to the accident site to rescue the passengers, some of whom were critically injured. Injured passengers have been moved to the Rajiv Gandhi general hospital.
The bus, Route 17M, was headed to Vadapalani from Parry’s Corner. According to MTC officials, as the bus navigated the connecting ramp on the flyover towards Nungambakkam, the driver allegedly lost control, breaking through the right parapet to fall onto the road below. The officials have said the driver lost control due to over-speeding.
There were around 50 passengers in the bus. According to V. Anbazhagan, who was travelling in the bus, the driver was speaking on a cell phone.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Social Welfare B. Valarmathi, Chennai Commissioner of Police J.K. Tripathy and Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Sanjay Arora are at the accident site.
