The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has slapped police complaint against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi. The secretary of the BCCI, N Srinivasan, has filed a complaint with the Chennai police against the former chairman of Indian Premier League alleging criminal embezzlement of the BCCI’s funds worth 470 crore rupees (US$105 million approximately).
Commissioner of Chennai police, Mr. Rajendran confirmed the complaint filed against Modi saying that the BCCI secretary had "preferred a police complaint" against the controversial IPL personality Lalit Modi, principally with regard to the allotment of the IPL media rights and free commercial rights.
According to the Chennai police commissioner, a detailed complaint has been filed against Modi by the board in which the accused has been alleged of three main charges. The complaint was filed with the Chennai police because the BCCI (Board of Control of Cricket in India) is registered in that city (Chennai).
"There are three main charges...It is a detailed complaint that they have given. So we will go through the complaint. It will be investigated by us as BCCI is registered in Chennai," said Rajendran.
Lalit Modi has already been issued a ‘Blue Corner notice’ by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for financial irregularities in the third edition of the IPL (Indian Premier League) earlier this year. Modi has denied receiving any such communication from Enforcement Directorate saying that neither he nor his lawyer has received any such notice. Modi’s denial of notice makes it binding for law-enforcement agencies around the globe to arrest him wherever they find him and inform the ED (Enforcement Directorate) accordingly.
The Board of Control of Cricket in India has carried out a series of moves to undo the decisions and deals carried out by Lalit Modi during his tenure as the chairman of Indian Premier League and filing complaint with the Chennai police against him is the latest move of the board. Earlier two IPL franchises were expelled over issues of their ownership.
